In Maltese only 2 grammatical genders (f/m) occur; It has only 1 definite article (il), which is proclitic [i.e. without stress], becomes i- before or after a vowel, and assimilates to a following coronal consonant [i.e. articulated with the flexible front part of the tongue], e.g. iċ-ċavetta (the key), id-dizzjunarju (the dictionary), in-nadir (the floor), ir-razzett (the farm), is-serp (the snake), it-tieqa (the window), ix-xema’ (the wax), iż-żaqq (the bagpipe), iz-zamzim (the singing [of birds]).
