Dinis, Christos

ca. 1902-?
original: Ντύνης (Ντίνες), Χριστός

piper (&c.) mentioned by name

Born and lived in Skopia (Σκοπιά Φλώρινας) [S of Florina, prov. Macedonia]; In his youth he learned to play the Gaida, but later he turned to the European clarinet, which he played in a band (according to Ahrens, in Greece usually called a groupo [γρουπο] or koumpania [κουμπάνηα (wedding band)]) in one of the local pubs. During local festivities he still used to play, occasionally, his Gaida, the bag of which he had replaced with the inner tube of a car tyre; He also made small keyless clarinets, which he called klarino [κλαρίνο].

Instrument: Gaida

YouTube (1) (Μακεδονικό Χασάπικό [Macedonian Hasapiko]) and (2) (Μακεδονικός Συρτός [Macedonian Syrtos*]); Both melodies are played on a Gaida (which doesn't appear, however, in any of the photos shown on either "video");
*NB (linguistics, ws): The singular form is συρτός, the plural of which is "συρτοί" (syrtoí); ΣΥΡΤΟ (syrto), as printed on the record labels, is the accusative form.
