Born in Carbury [NNE of Edenderry, Co. Kildare]; One of 4 brothers, respectable farmers, he took to "playing the pipes" as a youth and migrated to Dublin, where he acquired the tools and business of "younger Kenna" on the latter’s death; O’Neill states (1912) that "his instruments, of which many are yet in existence, display neat workmanship and, though lacking in volume, are pure and sweet in tone"; NB: ➺ Thomas Kenna ("the younger").
