Burke, Nicholas

1837-? [>1912]

piper (&c.) mentioned by name

Born in Annaghdown, on the banks of Lough Corrib, Co. Galway; One of the 36 "Irish pipers of distinction living in the early years of the 20th century" mentioned in O’Neill (Chapter XXII: p.279-340 [Though the heading of p.281 still reads "Pipers in the 2nd half of the 19th century"]); He emigrated to America in early manhood, and played only for his own pleasure or the entertainment of his friends, and invariably in his own home; In Ireland he would be called a gentleman piper, who, according to O’Neill, "may aptly be termed the Plutarch of the pipers".

Instrument: Uilleann pipe(s)
