Thompson, Robert ("Bob")

Born in Cork; Initially taught by his father (a teacher of Irish, and a skillful piper); His chief patron was the Hon. Alderman William Phair, who enabled him to travel to Dublin to attend the 1st "Oireachtas" (1897), where he played on the alderman’s pipes, "for he had none of his own for many a year", and outclassed all competitors.
