Touhey, Patrick J. ("Patsy")
1865-1923left-handed piper (&c.) mentioned by name
Born in Loughrea (Co. Galway), but in 1869 his parents moved to the USA; The best known of living performers of his generation, he was a "ciotogach" [left-handed] piper; According to Wikipedia, his "middle drone was replaced with a regulator with a single key that sounded an E-note, which would otherwise have been unavailable", but this fact is not mentioned at all in »The piping of Patsy Touhey«; His grandfather Michael Twohill (the older form of the Irish surname O’Tuathail), born in 1800, is reputed to have been a celebrated piper in his day, and his father, James Twohill (1839-1875), was an excellent piper who played almost exclusively for the local gentry; His father’s elder brothers John (*1831), who died in early manhood, and "Pat" (*1836), a fine performer, rambled through England as professional pipers.
