Carbone, Giuseppe [b] ("Peppino")
*1932maker of bagpipes (&c.) mentioned by name
Born in Colliano (prov. Salerno), he lived in San Vittore (a fraction of Colliano); Came from a family of Zampognari, i.e. of players, not makers; According to Gala, "he became a constructor almost out of necessity, because he lived in a community full of musicians and, in the framework of traditional instrumental and musical self-sufficiency, it can be said that his workshop is the result of a need for collectivity"; In his youth there were many old players who made their own reeds and spare parts, when 16-17 years old, his first attempt was to make a complete Zampogna with (as he told himself) «a knife, a gouge and (to make the bore) a piping hot iron bar»; After having made a hand-driven lathe «with a rod and string», he went, single-handedly, through the entire historical development of the lathe, from the use of a flywheel (a bicycle wheel weighted with cement), till the addition of an electric motor, the first one of which he took from an old washing machine; Brother of Rocco; NB: Not a relative of Giuseppe [a].
