Midiri, Giuseppe

1929-2017

piper (&c.) mentioned by name

Born in Saponara (prov. Messina); A shepherd, he was one of the major interpreters of the traditional instrumental music of his region in the 20th century; In the 1940s he moved, for reasons related to pastoral practice, to San Filippo Superiore, a hill village (a fraction of Messina), where he took part in the Christmas novena, in particular to accompany the Litany singing of Loreto; After his arrival in the village, he influenced all the other players with his style and his repertoire. His execution technique, and the melodic themes he performed, were very elaborate and refined, marked by the "à sicilia" style of the pipers of his native village.

Instrument: Ciaramedda
