Kawulok, Jan [b]

1924-2008

piper (&c.) mentioned by name

Born in Istebna-Bystry [Poland]; Having married, he settled in Jabłonków [Jablunkov (CZ)]; Contrary to appearances, he was not related to Jan Kawulok "uod Wojtosza", the outstanding gajdosz of Istebna; Oddly, Katarzyna & Maciej Szymonowiczowie refer to him as a "young gajdosz" [sic], who started to play the Gajdy when "barely forty years old" [sic (probably correct: fourteen years old; ws)], having borrowed a Gajdy from the "Czeski Dom Młodzieża" [Czech Youth House]; That instrument was probably of poor quality, because Jan soon decided to buy a new Gajdy from his namesake in Istebna, who also taught him to play the Gajdy, and even stayed a few days at his home, to give him lessons; A member of the "Gorol" choir in Jablunkov, he did not play the Gajdy professionally, but rather occasionally, for company, mainly during social meetings related to the activities of the choir; He played, among others, with violinists Paweł Niedoba of Nawsie [i.e. Návsí (CZ); ws] and Franciszek Hanak; After his death, his widow sold his Gajdy to gajdosz and folk sculptor Otmar Kantor (*1960) of Jablunkov.

Instrument: Gajdy śląskie
