Born in Alšvanga (also called Alsunga [German: Alschwangen]), which is the centre of the Suiti, a small Catholic community in the Lutheran western part of Latvia; He died in Rīgā; A student of Nikolajs Heņķis, he was a kokle player and kokle master, as well as a bagpipe player; NB: His kokle and bagpipes are kept in the Royal Museum in Stockholm.
