A single, double or triple pipe, usually played with circular breathing, the mouth being used as an air reservoir; Hornpipes are considered to be primitive bagpipes.

Some types have a mouthpiece made of cow-horn, a gourd or wood; A bell can be shared by the pipes, or attached to each of them.
