Qeej tso plig (gender unknown)

Release of the Spirit

specific traditional playing style or genre

Identical types: 6

Mentioned by Morrison, who claims that "The Hmong qeej is most often associated with the Hmong funeral ceremony, though in fact there are seven major genre [sic] of qeej music", the other 6 being qeej nyuj dlaab (Second Funeral), qeej tshoob (Wedding), qeej noj tsab (New Year), qeej tsaa hauv toj (Big Fair), qeej yug (for the death of the first daughter in a family of the Hang clan if she has not married before she dies), and qeej tuag (Funeral Ceremony); Because Morrison was unable to establish a relation between the fact that there are 7 genres of Qeej music and the 7 women and pipes mentioned in the legend [➺ Ntiv; ws], she calls it "another coincidence that I mention in passing", though it could be possible that the number 7 has a special significance in Hmong culture.
