Cheng

Shēng

French transliteration; Also a main entry in »Encyclopædia britannica«, 11th ed. (1910); According to the author of the article (K.S. [Kathleen Schlesinger]) "the cheng resembles a tea-pot filled with bamboo pipes of graduated lengths"; According to Mahillon, "Four of the pipes of the cheng have never had a reed, their only purpose is to contribute to the symmetry of its shape."; NB¹: Curiously, François-Joseph Fétis refers to it as a "small organ"; NB²: Stainer refers to it, more specifically, as "the cheng or Chinese organ"; NB³: ➺ Tscheng.
