Húlú shēng / Húlúshēng (-)
original: 葫芦笙 (simplified; traditional 葫蘆笙)
Mouth organ with a gourd as wind chest
From 葫芦 (bottle gourd/calabash); One of the oldest types of Asian mouth organ, it usually has 5 bamboo pipes with Free reeds; Unlike most Asian mouth organs, the pipes are open at both ends and the lower ends protrude through the base of the gourd; By covering the lower end of a pipe with the thumb, the resonant frequency of the pipe is changed, causing its tone to be lowered in pitch; The instrument is popular among several minorities of southwestern China (Dǎi (傣族 [Thai]), Kǔcōng (苦聪民族*), Lāhù (拉祜族), Lìsù (傈僳族), Nàxī (纳西族), Nù (怒族), Wǎ (佤族 [Va]), and Yí (彝族); *NB: 族 (zú [minority]) is added to all names of Chinese ethnic groups (i.e. Dǎizú, &c); 民 (mín; ➺ Kǔcōng) means "the people" (i.e. "Kǔcōng mínzú [The Kucong people minority]"); ➺ Ang, Naw, Ngail mo, and Nuo (SE Asia), and Piáo shēng.
