Literal translation: 高: "high"; 音: "sound/tone"; 笙: "mouth organ"; In internet source translated as "soprano" [which is actually 女高音 (nǚgāoyīn)]; A 20th century "reformed" Shēng is usually provided with 36 keys in order to enable the player to reach all pipes; According to internet source a version with 38 keys is growing increasingly popular.
