Japanese name of an early Chinese mouth-organ (竽 (Yú)); Extinct; Blench states that "In the eight [sic; 8th] century [i.e. Nara period (710-794 AD); ws], the Chinese presented a gift of 3 shēng and 3 yu to the Japanese court at Nara. The yu fell almost immediately into disuse, although some of these instruments, u in Japanese, are still preserved in the Shoso-In [i.e. Shōsōin (正倉院); ws] Imperial Treasure House in Nara"; ➺ Korea.
