Term used for the first 4 church-modes in mediaeval music; A melody is called authentic if its lowest note (not counting a leading tone) is the tonic; Metaphorically, the Highland bagpipes, the Gaita galega, and the majority of French types, &c. may be called authentic bagpipes; ➺ Plagal.
