Generic term for all kinds of bagpipes, French or otherwise; NB¹: According to WNT, "from Old French/French"; NB²: Unfortunately, the references to both sources mentioned in the primary lemma in WNT are inactive (yet) as links [ws, Nov. 2021]; NB³: In his »Dictionnaire pratique et raisonné des instruments de musique anciens et modernes« (Paris, 1886), Albert Jacquot oddly defines the instrument as an "instrument pastoral produisant des sons nazillards" [sic; Translation: "a pastoral instrument producing nasal sounds"; NB4: According to all consulted dictionaries the usual spelling is "nasillards"]; NB5: ➺ the illustration on the website of the British Museum; NB6: Jacquot also mentions a "Clavecin à orchestre" (imitation de cornemuse [?]); NB7: Mahillon also classifies the accordion, &c. among the "polyphonic instruments with [an] air reservoi"; NB8: ➺ Musette (General term).
