Flat decorative ring at the foot of the chanter, primarily intended to prevent the wood from cracking.

Traditionally made of ivory or (usually richly engraved) silver, nowadays [i.e. late 20th century; ws] often of synthetic material, or metal (such as aluminium, e.g. in chanters of non-European origin).
