18th century; Courted, according to Baines, a certain popularity during the 2nd half of the 19th century; Now generally agreed to be the precursor of the Uilleann pipe(s); NB¹: In some sources informally referred to as "Pastoral pipes"; NB²: ➺ similar terms.
Conical chanter with a 2-octave range and an extension allowing to play the low leading note; NB³: Its bore is narrower than that of the Uilleann pipe(s).
