Stainer refers to this term in connection with the Musette, stating that "By some it is said to have been also called chalumeau by the French; but it is probable that this name was only used so far in connection with the bagpipe as to describe the pipe which was pierced with finger-holes" [i.e. the chanter; ws]; NB¹: ➺ Pipeau; NB²: ➺ homonyms and types.
