Piper (m)
any person who plays some kind of bagpipe (&c.)
O’Neill mentions at least 240 players of Union pipes (in Ireland and abroad) by their full name (including 5 women, 21 blind pipers, 15 who played at least 1 second instrument (10 were also fiddlers, 2 fluters), as well, and 12 pipers who were also makers); Several times, however, he unfortunately mixes information on "pipers", not differentiating between players of Union, War- and Highland pipes; His list of 17 "Pipers penalized in the 16th and 17th centuries" (p.56) seems to contain such a mixture, whereas he adds a list of 25 players of the "Piob Mor" or Irish warpipe, penalised in the 17th century (p.57); NB: ➺ homonyms.
