General term, once also used in a general fashion for itinerant musicians who played certain wind instruments (fifes [short transverse flutes without keys], shawms, or bagpipes [and even trumpets]): ➺ Pijper, Piper, and Pipper; NB¹: This term was also used for "Stadstrompetters" (Town trumpeters [Town waits?]); NB²: ➺ German Pfeifer, &c.; NB³: ➺ Scotland.
