General term, once also used in a general fashion for itinerant musicians who played certain wind instruments (Compare Dutch Pijper, &c.); NB¹: From the charter of association of the guild of minstrels, which was founded,1407, in Uznach (canton St. Gallen); NB²: ➺ German Pfeifer, Pfeiffer, Pfiffer, Phifar(e), Phifer, and Swiss Pfiiffer.
