From a letter, written between 1710 and 1735, from a M. de La Barre to a Monsieur de Villiers, in which is stated that "it is a kind of cornemuse, but much larger, known in barbaric [sic] times"; NB¹: Term not encountered in other sources, but in connection with musical instruments I detected the closely related designation "Cacbou" [sic], which is mentioned (in relation with bowed instruments) in Albert Lavignac, »Encyclopédie de la musique et dictionnaire du conservatoire«, part 3 (1927); NB²: According to 2 main French-English dictionaries, "bouc" translates as "billy goat"; NB³: ➺ Musette de Poitou.
