Sifflet (m)
(with) definite article: lepreparatory "chanter" (types)
Small instrument(s) with a single or double reed, made by children (usually with the assistance of their parents, or older friends) to use them to get familiar with the playing technique of the Cabrette.
Materials used:
(a) Whistles with a single reed: a stem of elderberry or lilac from which the pith is removed; The tube produced must be plugged at one of the two ends, and at the other end a strip is detached, then scraped in order to allow it to vibrate under the pressure of breath; NB¹: A stalk of bamboo, cane, or rye, or a quill pen can be used as well.
(b) Whistles with a double reed: a dandelion stalk or chestnut bark that is removed from a young shoot by tapping the stem with the handle of a knife while reciting a formula (in Auvergnat) («Lébo, lébo tsontorélo / Chur lo quo de no bédèlo / Chi bouol pas tsonta / Tè caoro péta» [Get up, get up, chanterelle / On the [... ?] of my [?; French: "Sur la queue de ma velle"] / If you don't want to sing / You'll have to break]); NB²: The bark of a young ash can be used as well.
