Hornpipe without a mouthpiece: double chanter (no drone), no bell / idioglot single reeds: down-cut
Mentioned in Mahillon as a gift of H.B. Lieutenant-General Baron Constantin de Stackelberg, director of the Band of H.M. the Emperor of Russia. A shawm [sic] from the region Kazan, composed of two pipes [with down-cut single reeds, the left one of which [according to Mahillon (WS: as seen from the viewer's perspective?)] is pierced with six lateral [sic (?)] holes; NB¹: The author ignores the fact that left-handed musicians could play using the opposite hands (Compare Destra (Right hand chanter of a Zampogna)) !; He also mentions a similar instrument from the region Smolensk, that has five lateral [sic (?)] holes in both pipes; NB²: Mahillon's spelling is, however, undoubtedly a corruption of Jaleika; NB³: He even calls his nr. 2305 (➺ p.179), a Brielka [i.e. Russian: Брёлка (pronunciation: Bryolka) !] or Joleika [sic], which in my perception is an uncanny corruption that I haven't encountered in any of the consulted sources either…
Range: f♯¹-g♯-a-b¹-c♯²-d♯-e²); the right pipe has only three holes (f♯¹-g♯-a-b¹), pierced exactly at a height corresponding to the first three holes of the left one; The ring finger, middle finger and index finger of the right hand* cover the corresponding holes of the two pipes, the same fingers of the left hand* cover the 4th, 5th and 6th lateral [sic (?)] holes of the left pipe; The pipes are made of cane, the reed as well, the tongue is cut by a double longitudinal slit and a transverse incision at the upper part.
