This is a rather unfortunate misinterpretation as a synonym of Feadan dubh (➺ Feadan); Sir Walter Scott mentions the term in »The fair maid of Perth«, in the 1894 edition of which it is, however, clearly translated as "Black charter [which is a document with a statement of principles, duties and purposes of an organisation!; ws], "preserved in the family of a Highland chief [➺ NB], and much honoured to this day" [i.e. late 19th century; ws]; NB: According to Smibert, »The Clans of the Highlands of Scotland« (Edinburgh, MDCCCL [1850], p.90), "The great novelist here alludes to the chief of the Macphersons" ...
