Born in North Shields; Grandson of Robert Reed [sic]; Son of pipe maker Robert Reid; Brother of Elizabeth; A music teacher and musical instrument maker himself, he was the first to make chanters in D, which could be played with other instruments; He also increased the number of chanter keys to 17, resulting in a range of 2 octaves, and the number of drones to 6; In 1857 he was appointed 2nd Piper to the Duke of Northumberland, as a deputy to William Thomas Green.
