The MacCrimmons were hereditary pipers to the MacLeods of Dunvegan; Iain Odhar was the 1st of them (from 1600 until his death); In his »Pipers’ handbook« John MacLellan names all 8 of them, stating that "all the available evidence points to the MacCrimmon family as being the root of present-day piping; They held court at Borreraig in Skye from about 1600 until 1700, and it was to this school that many pipers from other clans were sent to be finished and perfected in the art of piping".
