Highland bagpipe

Bagpipe, mouth-blown: 4 stocks (a: single chanter / b: 3 drones in 3 stocks)

Identical types: 13

According to one internet source (Celtic life), "The original pipes in Scotland probably had, at the most, a single drone. The second drone was added to the pipes in the mid to late 1500s. The first written mention of the "Great Pipes" was in 1623 when a piper from Perth was prosecuted for playing on the Sabbath. The third drone, or the great drone, came into use early in the 1700s" (NB¹ [August 2021]: Unfortunately, the text of this item has disappeared during a recent update of the internet source); NB²: ➺ Binioù bras (France: Brittany), and Masaka bājā (India); ➺ Habbān (UAE [reference to Oman]), and Sodina (Madagascar); NB³: ➺ Zakpijp (NL); NB4: Kuhač, who is of Slovenian origin, refers to it as the "Skotske gajde" [which appears to be a plurale tantum: Scottish bagpipes], mentioned as "schottische Sackpfeife" in his source: Carl Fortlage, »Sechs philosophische Vorträge« (Jena, 1869); NB5: ➺ Gaita-de-foles (Brazil; NB²);.

According to MacLellan, "The best pipes are made of African blackwood ..."; NB6: ➺ Remark (on details) in Lowland pipes.
