One of the most famous pipers of the 19th century, and the outstanding personality of the family; Taught by his father Angus (1800-1887; who himself was taught by Iain Dubh MacCrimmon and John Mackay of Raasay) and Archibald Munro (called "another Mackay of Raasay* product" by MacLellan, according to whom there’s evidence that Angus’s long-lived father, Peter (1714-1824; nickname: "Auld Dubrach") was taught by earlier MacCrimmons); Calum was "a brilliant player and a teacher to most of the best-known players of the latter part of the 19th century", including his son Angus of Achany Lairg (1877-1976), who was a well noted player and judge, whose own son, Malcolm Ross (1906-1966), was a first-rate player who won all the major Pìobaireachd competitions; *NB: ➺ John MacDonald and Angus Mackay of Raasay.
