Czepczor, Jura [Jerzy]

ca. 1881-?
nickname(s): "Kocurek" [Little tom-cat]

bagpipe maker, also a piper (or vv.) (&c.), mentioned by name

Born in Jaworzynka "u Gorzołki" [i.e. Gorzałki, a hamlet (quarter) NNE of Jaworzynka; ws], he was a piper and pipe maker, and also made "kyrpce" [in standard Polish: "kierpce" (a kind of mocassins); ws]; Usually, he played together with violinist Józef Heczko "Niewidómy" [The Blind] (1914-1973) and with Pavel Zogata "Gajdek" (CZ); He is the hero of the book »Marynka, cera gajdosza« [Marynka, the daughter of a piper] by Paweł Łysek (1914-1978), in which he wrote: "The old piper Jura Czepczor "Kocurek", was a widower, and when he gave his daughter* in marriage, the neighbours helped to pluck feathers for the "zogłówki", i.e. the pillows for the dowry of the bride"; *NB¹: The name of Jura’s daughter was Marynka, and they both were authentic inhabitants of Jaworzynka; The book touches on the many problems of the life of a musician, father and husband, which was full of ups and downs…; NB²: Note the use of "Jura" as his first name by Paweł Łysek, whereas Katarzyna & Maciej Szymonowiczowie, who refer to his book, even quoting from it, use "Jerzy", instead, but fail to provide us with an explanation; In his book »Zdobnictwo metalowe na Śląsku« [Metal decorating in Silesia] (Kraków, 1938), p.XIV, Mieczysław Gładysz also mentions him as "Jerzy"; NB³: ➺ Paweł Czepczor (CZ).
