Urbaczka, Paweł
ca. 1873-?bagpipe maker, also a piper (or vv.) (&c.), mentioned by name
Born and lived in Koniaków-Legiery [ESE of Istebna]; A gajdosz and builder of Gajdy; According to Katarzyna & Maciej Szymonowiczowie, "In the past he was able to build most of his Gajdy by himself, and he probably also made the undoubtedly most beautifully decorated ancient instrument that has survived to modern times. It delights in the diversity of decorative motifs and their dense arrangement and originality of decorations"; It is said, that he emigrated several times to America; An internet source contains the following short narrative (called "The story of a Gajdy"), told by one of his children: "Daddy [i.e. Paweł Urbaczka] was a piper; He played together with „Jóneciek“ [i.e. violinist Jan Matuszny (1901-?); ws]; Because nobody wanted to learn [to play; ws] it, he sold his Gajdy to Stanisław Wałach of Andziołówka [the northernmost quarter of Istebna; ws]; Then they placed this cross on the chapel that is near the road [in Koniaków] for this Gajdy" [This seems to imply that the amount received for the Gajdy was spent on the cross for the chapel; ws].
