Číp, Pavel

*1944

bagpipe maker, also a piper (or vv.) (&c.), mentioned by name

Born and lives [2020; ws] in Zubří [W of Rožnov pod Radhoštěm]. Having started as a maker of wooden toys, he became a "model" maker (These are hand-carved wooden pattern "stamps" used to prepare fabric with wax in order to produce traditional "modrotisk" [blue-print, an indigo textile reserve technique closely related to "batik"]). Interested in the traditional music of his region, he started to play and make his own instruments, including a bagpipe, and evolved in a quality craftsman with a well-equipped workshop. He and his wife Marie have two sons, Mirek and Petr, who became, as a matter of course, involved in making various kinds of historical and traditional musical instruments, including several types of bagpipe; When I was on holidays in Rožnov, in January 1995, I was introduced to him by Mrs. Alena Divínová of the Valašské muzeum v přírodě. When I asked Pavel to make a Hrubé gajdy for me, he took me to his home and workshop, where he first taught me to play a bellows-blown bagpipe, then asked me to choose a wood type (I decided on pear), and made me a really beautiful instrument; Having started as a client, I soon became friends with the family, and visited them several times, staying in their home as a guest. When his eyesight inexplicably deteriorated, Pavel gradually had to refrain from working. His sons took over his work, Petr making the instruments, Mirek concentrating on fine-tuning the recorders (which form the "steady" source of earning their livelihood); NB: ➺ Józef Bocek, and Antoni Krężelok.
