Mouth organ with a "rectangular" or tubular wind chest

Identical types: 15

Thai name of the mouth organ played among the Thai minority in Vietnam; It has 14 pipes (in 2 parallel rows), 1 of which is mute (a dummy without a reed); Blench also refers to this instrument after writing about the Lao Khaen gao, but the syntax he uses is rather confusing ("This instrument [i.e. the Khaen gao; ws], known as ken pe or pi pe, is also played by the Tai people in Việt Nam where it has 13 sounding pipes and a single dummy pipe"), thus suggesting that Ken pe and Pi pe are synonyms of Khaen gao, which is clearly not the case, because the latter has 18 pipes and is considerably larger; NB: ➺ Thailand.

Wooden wind chest, with bamboo pipes (610-930 mm; Ø 20 mm).

Kềnh, Khèn bè, Phan, Pí pe
