Usually made of elder (Sambucus nigra), sycamore maple (Acer pseudoplatanus), or aspen (Populus tremula), rarely of cane (Arundo donax); Bagpipe maker Ivan Gajdardžiev used bamboo, his father Stan’o [Станьо] used "калина" [kalìna: mountain ash/rowan (Viburnum opulus L. [the English name of which is, according to internet sources, "guelder-rose"])]; According to Atanassov, reeds are also made of "a special type of "дрян" [drjan: cornel (Cornus mas(cula))]"; According to Širola, the reed is made of šibikovina or kalinj [or kalinje?] (Viburnum opulus L.).
