From Arabic غيدا (ghaidā [gentle]) ?; Used in typical Bulgarian ensembles to accompany songs and dances; Traditionally, the Gajda is the only instrument used to accompany the ancient, nocturnal fire-walking ritual "Нестинарство" [Nestinàrstvo (in Greek: αναστενάρια [anastenária])], connected with the feast of St. Constantine and St. Helen in the Strandža mountain region (SE Bulgaria); This ritual, in which Bulgarians and Bulgarian Greeks participated, died out in 1956, but thanks to a revival it was entered, in 2009, in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists; NB¹: ➺ Čifte gajda and Kaba gajda; NB²: ➺ homonyms, &c. (incl. Gaida and Gaita) & Sakfluto.
