Backstitching
gracing technique (in order of complexity / frequency): a22
Term used by older pipers in America; A cascade of descending triplets, used interchangeably with staccato triplets; The effect was part of "Patsy" Touhey’s standard ornamentation as a final flourish when drawing to the close of a piece of piping, if the tune were suitable; Basically, it is a form of tripletting, in which 2 melody notes near to each other, or equal in pitch, are separated and ornamented by a pair of short staccato notes (the "stitches") played with the other hand.
