Zampogna (f)
(with) definite article: laBagpipe: any type (even if foreign to the local tradition)
From Greek συμφωνία (Symfonia [Latin: Symphonia]), or perhaps, as Edith Gerson-Kiwi has suggested, from Greek σΐφων (siphon [reed, artery]); Name for folk bagpipes of central and southern Italy, also used as a generic term for all kinds of bagpipes, Italian or otherwise; Also: shawm, seldom: hurdy-gurdy, reed; NB¹: Mentioned, in connection with the Sordellina, and elsewhere, in François Joseph M. Noel, »Dizionario delle invenzioni, origini e scoperte, relative ad arti, scienze, commercio, ec [sic]«, (Livorno, 1850), which is a translation (by Angiolo Orvieto) from the French; NB²: Marcuse claims, rather dubiously, that the name is the etymon of Greek Tsampouna, ignorantly parroted by Podnos (NB³: ➺ All Zampogna); NB4: ➺ Zampogne; NB5: ➺ Nablvm [Nablum].
