From Latin "ascop(er)a" [leather bag]; Type without a chanter key; According to written sources, it was rather diffused in the past, but later mainly found in the Siciliana valley [SSW of Teramo], Fucino (a plateau in the Marsica area, prov. L’Aquila) and in the Monti della Laga area [E of Amatrice, prov. Rieti, Latium [though formerly Abruzzo & Molise; ws]]; A solo instrument, now [i.e. in the 1990s; ws] almost extinct, it was always less frequent than keyed instruments; The other main difference with the latter type is the construction of its pipes, which are turned in one piece each (incl. the open bells); NB¹: According to Gioielli, who fails to add details, "it has characteristics similar [!; ws] to those of the Ciaramelle of Amatrice"; NB²: ➺ homonyms, &c.
