Zampogna di Panni (f)

(with) definite article: la
~ of Panni

Bagpipe, mouth-blown: 2 stocks (a: single chanter / b: drone)

Identical types: 61

Panni [SW of Foggia, on the border with Campania]; Despite its limited range of half an octave, it is primarily used as a solo instrument; Territorially limited, it is used, according to Gioielli, "almost exclusively in the village, almost only in yuletide, and (with some exceptions) on 3 occasions only: December 24th (Christmas’ Eve), on the morning of December 25th, and during a procession with the Christmas Child on January 6th (Epiphany)", after which he mentions only 2 other ritual occasions, in San Giovanni Rotondo (prov. Foggia) and Foggia, plus the occasional presence of pipers at the annual "Festival Internazionale della Zampogna" in Scapoli (prov. Isernia, Molise [➺ Mostra - Mercato della Zampogna]); In the late 20th and early 21st century the Panni piping tradition experienced a grave crisis, and there were only very few active pipers left; NB: In the 1940s zampognaro Giuseppe Cobuzzi attempted a modification of the instrument [with] a double drone ([i.e.] two parallel totari, tied together with twine), which he didn’t pursue (➺ Gioielli, Utriculus 23, p.5, footnote 8).

Apparently there are no fixed measures for the several parts of the instrument, but the length of the chanter of different instruments appears to be, usually, almost identical; The length of the drones (which are made of "male" cane) varies, however; Details given (see the various parts) refer to an instrument made by Francesco Capobianco in 1997, now at display in the Mostra permanente di zampogne e cornamuse italiane e straniere of the "Circolo della Zampogna", in Scapoli; Its bag (ca. 450 mm in length) is made from lambskin.
