Zampognatore (m)
(with) definite article: il [sic]/loany person who plays some kind of bagpipe (&c.)
According to Nicolo Oneto, »Memoria sopra le cose musicali di Sardegna« (1841), p.21, a term used for a Launeddas player; Vittorio Angius (1797-1862) mentions in his »Dizionario geografico-storico-statistico-commerciale degli Stati di S.M. il re di Sardegna« (Torino, 1836), vol. II, p.723, "uno zampognatore", in vol. IX, p.161, its plural form ("I zampognatori"), and in vol. X, p.135, the singular again ("Il zampognatore" [In modern standard Italian orthography the correct spelling of the definite articles would be "Lo" (singular) or "Gli" (plural); ws]); Weis Bentzon states that "A launeddas player was paid about 50 lire [today’s rate?; ws] to play at a wedding around 1910, and today [i.e. in the 1960s; ws] he may get 3-5000 lire [today’s rate?; ws], and a similar amount of money to play for a procession"; In the Campidano di Cagliari and Oristano, in the Trexenta and Sarrabus, the Launeddas player was essential at feasts, and without him nobody would dance; Several stories are known of masters (of the past and present-day), who were/are so "jealous", that they did/do their utmost to prevent their pupils from learning or copying particular Pikkiadas; Pietro Sassu states that "knowing how to play launeddas means also possessing the competence to build them…"; And indeed most players make their own instruments; Only in a few cases players order their instruments from other players/manufacturers; NB¹: ➺ Antonio Lara, Felice Pili, &c.;
