From "prebirati" [to select / choose / play on a string instrument]; Term introduced by Širola; With a separate pit for each finger; Main regional characteristics: Istria and Kvarner islands: comparatively small, rectangular, very flat in cross-section, slightly diverging bores, finger-pits relatively shallow; Otišić: sides and bores downwards divergent, slightly oval in cross-section¹; Žegar: rectangular, flat in cross-section*, slightly diverging bores; Zelovo: rectangular, flat in cross-section, parallel bores; *NB: according to Širola, Otišić chanters have a flat cross-section, those from Žegar an oval one, but several pictures seem to suggest the contrary.
