Etymologically related to German "Schalmei" and English "shawm", this Polish designation is threefold: Since the 16th century it pointed, first of all, at the treble variant of the Bumbarde family; It was, however, also used for various other simple reed pipes, and, moreover, for the chanter of a Dudy, as well.
