From Hebrew נֵבֶל (nébèl [wineskin]); Hebrew term for a bagpipe, mentioned in Trichet, who mentions the term also as a possible synonym of psalterion [➺ ref. to Mahillon (who refers to Adrianus Junius and Augustin Justinian) and Stainer, below], and in Villoteau, who compares the instrument with the "antique Oriental" [sic] Zouqqarah (NB¹: ➺ also Zouqqara); NB²: ➺ Nibiles; NB³: ➺ Nablvm; NB4: Mahillon mentions the term "Nebel" as "a type of neckless harp", one of the synonyms of which is psalterion; NB5: Stainer mentions the nebel several times as a kind of string instrument (harp, guitar, psaltery, &c.), as well, rather pungently objecting to the idea, suggested by "some", that "it would answer the description of a bagpipe, because nebel was derived from rounded vase or leather bottle!"
