Name for the Southeast Asian Qeej among the Flowery Hmong [Chinese name: 花苗 (huā miáo); ws], who are a minority in western China. Mentioned in »Stone-Gateway and the Flowery Miao« (London, [1937]) by Will[iam] H. Hudspeth, according to whom "The sound, which is something like that of bagpipes [bold type by ws], is produced by brass reeds fixed into the tubes which are of different lengths". NB: In his PhD thesis »Hmong music in Northern Vietnam: identity, tradition and modernity« (University of Sheffield, Dept. of Music, May 2012) Lonán Ó Briain quotes Hudspeth's description of the "use of the ggeh (qeej) in courting" among the Flowery Hmong.
