Born in Bellingham, on his family’s foundry farm, where he lived all his life; A noted piper, he at first learned to play from George Grey Armstrong (who had to give up teaching through ill-health), subsequently taking further lessons for two years from Tom Clough; He once said that "Tom wouldn’t have been much use to a novice piper… but George had a gift for teaching a novice.
