From G. Zanazzo, »Usi, costumi e pregiudici del popolo di Roma« (Torino, 1909). According to the author "they arrived, 15 and 16 days before Christmas, from la Ciociaria [Latium] and the Abruzzi, to play the novene [Christmas carols], adding that "they always were a couple: the older one played the Zampogna, and the younger one the Bbifera" [shawm]; NB: Compare "Lu bbifere", mentioned in »Canti popolari abruzzesi«, a cura di Tommaso Bruni (Pescara, 1907).
