Pifferari (m) (plurale tantum)
(with) definite article: ilocal term(s) for a duo or band (ensemble) including a piper (&c.)
A duo of a Ciaramella (shawm) and a Zampogna player; Central Latium; NB¹: The singular form (Pifferaro), which actually is the term for the shawm player only, is often erroneously used in literature [mainly by foreigners] for the bagpiper (➺ Zampognaro); The simple cause of this misunderstanding is the fact that the term "piper" (and its equivalents in several languages) is historically (also) used to denote a piccolo player in a military band; NB² ➺ Zampognari (Molise); NB³: ➺ Pifferaro (Calabria); NB4): ➺ my remarks in Sampognaro and Sampognatore regarding Stainers unfortunate misinterpretation of the plurale tantum form of the term Pifferari as "oboists".
